FAQs - Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most used vegetable tannin extract for tanning and retanning leather in the world?

The most widely used vegetable tannin extract for tanning and re-tanning leather in the world is the Mimosa Wattle. This tannin extract is widely preferred due to its effectiveness, availability and properties that give strength and flexibility to leather. Mimosa Wattle is grown in several regions, such as Brazil and South Africa and is essential in the production of tannins for the leather industry.

Mimosa Wattle is extracted from the bark of the Black Mimosa tree, which comes from forests located in southern Brazil. Seta's Mimosa Wattle extraction process is unique, innovative and totally sustainable.

Mimosa Wattle  is of the condensed or catechin type.

Mimosa Wattle, in addition to being a biodegradable product, is very versatile, as it can be used both in the tanning of chrome leathers of any thickness and softness, as well as in the tanning of 100% vegetable articles of any type. It can be used both to produce light and soft vegetable leathers and metal free type, as well as heavy items such as soles and shoe soles. Very light and dark vegetable leather can be produced due to the different types of shades of each line that Seta produces. It is easy to use as it has good water solubility, good penetration speed, can be used in combination with other plant extracts and synthetic tannins, improving the distribution of retanning agents, dyes and fatliquors. It can be used in any vegetable tanning system, whether it is fast in drums or static in tanks. Mimosa Wattle brings numerous benefits to leather as a natural look, “burn” properties, grain tightness, filling, excellent sandability and print retention.

Yes, tanning leather with vegetable extracts makes the skin more resistant, including against decomposition.

This happens because during the leather tanning process, vegetable extracts binds to the skin's proteins, which creates a more stable structure.

Mimosa Wattle is essential in the production of any type of vegetable leather, including shoe soles, midsole, soles and straps for belts, straps for pets, saddles for horses, artifacts in general, insoles, heels, sandals. leather, bags, etc.

Vegetable tanning, which uses mimosa wattle extract, is a natural process that results in a more rigid and resistant leather, ideal for products such as shoe soles, belts and riding saddles.

This type of leather is more environmentally friendly, as tannin is a natural substance extracted from the bark of the black acacia, without the use of synthetic chemicals.

On the other hand, chrome tanning is faster and results in a more flexible and soft leather, often used in clothing and upholstery.

However, chrome tanning is less sustainable as it involves chemicals that can be harmful to the environment if not properly managed.

Tanning with mimosa wattle extract is considered more sustainable and environmentally friendly compared to chrome tanning. The process uses natural tannins, which are biodegradable and have a lower environmental impact. In addition, black wattle is a renewable source, and the vegetable tanning process does not generate toxic waste, minimizing water and soil pollution.
