Seta Biome: The birds here

Sometimes here at Seta, we are lucky to find this beautiful and friendly species of bird, especially in the forest near our administrative building, in Estância Velha.

Known as Surucuá-variado, with the scientific name Trogon surrucura, this beautiful bird varies between 70 and 78 grams, measuring between 26 and 28 centimeters from head to tail. It normally feeds on insects, larvae, molluscs and fruits, but it has been observed even consuming the nectar of some flowers.

With vibrant colors that contrast in the midst of nature, the Surucuá-variado looks like a true work of art. Females have more neutral colors than males. This natural differentiation process is known as sexual dimorphism. Their nests are usually in holes higher up in trunks or in termite mounds at the top of trees. During breeding seasons, it is usually very territorial, chasing any “intruder” that approaches the nest or even the place where it seeks its food. It has the habit of resting in the trees during long hours of the day, which allows admirers, as well as us, to glimpse its beauty.

In Brazil, this species is found in the Pampa, Atlantic Forest, Cerrado and Caatinga biomes. And you, did you already know this bird?
