Tannins and their applications: Adhesives

Tannins and their applications: Adhesives

Continuing our series, today we will talk about adhesives.

Adhesives can have a natural origin or be produced synthetically. There are indications that the first use of adhesive substances occurred around 200,000 years ago, and the first references to adhesives in literature appeared around 2,000 B.C. They are natural glues of plant origin, composed of carbohydrates, specifically starch, a polysaccharide that acts as an energy reserve in plants and is found in several species.

And have you ever heard of bioadhesives?

Bioadhesives are tannin-based adhesives used in the production of particleboard, medium density fiberboard (MDF), and plywood, as a growing alternative to replace traditional fossil-based raw materials, reducing formaldehyde emissions, the main environmental problem associated with adhesives for wood panels derived from fossil resources.
