Ruminal acidosis: what is the solution for confined cattle?

Ruminal acidosis: what is the solution for confined cattle?

The rearing of confined cattle in Brazil has undergone a major transformation: much of the bulky feed is no longer offered to the animals, resulting in a significant increase in the proportion of concentrated feed. Such changes are due to the maximization of animal productivity, reduction of time in confinement and also for gains in meat quality.

However, diets with high levels of non-fibrous carbohydrates, such as concentrates, can lead to problems in the animal's metabolism. One of them is the reduction of ruminal pH which, being below 5.6, impairs the functioning of the rumen and promotes “subacute acidosis”. This condition, when maintained for long periods, leads to the situation of “acute acidosis”.

In addition to causing great economic losses, in more severe cases, acidosis can lead to death.

To prevent and/or control this problem, producers adopt management strategies or dietary adjustments.

Among them, the use of additives has been widely used.

The natural polyphenols present in NutreSet - Seta's natural zootechnical additive - are capable of protecting the rumen environment from this disorder, acting on the modulation of the microbiota and reducing the lactate-producing bacterial population, the main responsible for the reduction of ruminal pH and, consequently, the cases of ruminal acidosis.
