Have you ever heard of ASF?

African Swine Fever is a highly transmissible disease among domestic pigs, which can quickly decimate livestock. With variable clinical manifestations, to date, there is no vaccine with proven efficacy against the disease.

The high risk of rapid dissemination, with significant socioeconomic consequences, makes ASF a disease of mandatory notification with national and international official animal health control bodies. In Brazil, the last outbreak of the disease was recorded in 1981 and the country was declared free of ASF on December 5th, 1984.

Among the negative impacts of ASF are the speed with which the disease affects the economy. If there is evidence of ASF in a given location, there will immediately be disposal of pig populations, interfering with the supply and price of meat. With higher prices, agricultural commodities such as corn, soybeans and beef also undergo adjustments. In this cascading effect, the population's expenses with food are boosted and the entire agribusiness production chain is impacted.
