Crop-livestock-forest integration

Crop-livestock-forest integration

Sustainability has been on the agenda of major international forums, considering that its pillars aim at an economic, social and environmental gain. Thus, the insertion of agricultural strategies, such as ILPF, can bring benefits both in the agricultural, livestock and forestry-pastoral areas, as well as in the pillars that meet sustainable demands.

In the ILPF system, many productive scenarios can be incorporated, be it intercropping with other types of pastures, crop rotation, or alternation of animal species. These alternatives provide a mutual benefit for all the activities, besides optimizing the use of the land, it allows an environmentally correct exploration, with low emissions of noxious gases.

With the use of trees, such as the Black Acacia, which is highly valued in Rio Grande do Sul, there is the possibility of implementing crops and also the integration with animals. This way, there are benefits for the soil, with a greater amount of organic matter, nutrient cycling, and benefits for the animal, with thermal comfort.  The crop benefits from the straw left by the grass, as well as from the decompacting promoted by the roots of the forage plants. Besides increasing the incorporation of nitrogen into the soil, as with leguminous crops, they make available a greater contribution of nutrients to the pasture, contributing to animal performance.
