Tannins and their applications.

taça de vinho simbolizando os benefícios e aplicações do taninos

Due to their versatility, tannins can be used in several applications. In addition to our tannins for leather, water treatment and animal nutrition, we also offer natural solutions for beverages, cosmetics, adhesives, agriculture, pest control, treatment of metallic surfaces, civil construction, among others.

Today we will start a series of publications talking a little more about some of these applications and the benefits provided by tannins. To begin with, nothing better than talking about wine, this well-known drink that has accompanied much of the economic, political and sociocultural evolution of various western and eastern civilizations. From a historical point of view, it is difficult to state the exact origin, but there are references that indicate that the region of present-day Georgia (located in northern Greece) was the place where wine was probably produced for the first time, between 8,000 and 5,000 BC.

And did you know that tannins are used in the manufacturing process of this drink?

Producing quality , recognized and awarded wines requires dedication, knowledge and technology. Environmental conditions impact the vine in all its phenological stages, making it difficult in some vintages to make wines with the sensory profile desired by consumers. Still, a production allied to tannins and polyphenols can be fundamental to give structure and longevity to the wine.

Tannins are compounds that have a high antioxidant action, due to their ability to stabilize free radicals, thus preventing future damage that could be caused. In antiquity, wines produced with grapes with a higher tannin content were valued for withstanding travel and, even after months of production, maintaining their original quality.

In addition, tannins bring health benefits due to their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Although scientific studies are just beginning to demonstrate the health benefits of tannins and polyphenols contained in wine, several benefits have already been proven.
