Biome Seta: Pitanga

Biome Seta: Pitanga

The period between spring and summer is characterized by the blossoming and fruiting of various plants, changing the colors and tones of the landscape, as well as providing food for biodiversity. One of the trees that plays this role very well is the Pitanga, species described as Eugenia uniflora.

Its popular name comes from the ancient Tupi-Guarani and means "reddish fruit", a remarkable characteristic of the species. It is native to Brazil, occurring in the Northeast, Center-West, Southeast and South. It also has its natural distribution in Paraguay, Argentina and Uruguay. The species grows very well in the Cerrado, Atlantic Forest, and Pampa biomes, and is associated with diverse environments.

It is characterized by its bushy growth, between 2 and 4 meters high. Depending on the environment it is found in it can reach up to 9 m in height, yet it is considered a small tree. Its trunk is very branched and has a reddish or light brown coloring. The leaves are dark green, with red tones on the youngest branches, especially in times of intense cold. The flowers are white and abundant, occupying much of the crown during flowering.

The fruit, besides attracting several species of birds, can be eaten fresh, in the form of pulp and juice, being rich in vitamins (especially A). Its leaves are used in popular medicine for several conditions and there is also a vast use of its resources in the cosmetic industry. Due to its botanical characteristics the species is used in area recuperation projects and also in landscaping, both in gardens and on sidewalks.

In our areas of operation this species is easily found. We understand its importance to the environment and to other species, and we work to preserve the areas to help the continuity of the species.
