Did you know?
Vegetable tanning is one of the oldest techniques for leather production, used for over 5,500 years!
In 2008, archaeologists discovered a leather shoe from that period in Armenia in an impressive state of preservation, revealing that leaves and bark rich in tannins were already used to treat leather.
But what are tannins?
They are polyphenolic compounds found in various plants, responsible for naturally “tanning” leather. There are two types of tannins found in nature: hydrolyzable (pyrogallic) tannins and condensed (catechin-based) tannins.
One of the main sources of condensed tannins comes from the Black Wattle tree, which is 100% produced from controlled reforestation with environmental certification. Our company has been a pioneer in the sustainable use of Acacia since 1941!
